Visit to National Small Industries Corporation

Taking cognizance of the need to promote transfer of technology from India to Malawi, on 17 November 2017, H.E. Mr. George Mkondiwa conducted a visit to the National Small Industries Corporation Ltd. (NSIC), in Okhla in New Delhi. The High Commissioner was welcomed by the Chairman and managing Director Mr. Ravindra Nath and Dr. Praley Dey General Manager.

NSIC is a Government of India Parastatal under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) of the Government of India whose Mission is to promote and support Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Sector. Its mandate includes: provision of an integrated support services encompassing Marketing, Technology, Finance and other services.

The Corporation was formed in 1955 with the sole objective of promoting SMEs. The Corporation does this by providing assistance to SMEs in the form of training in business management and skills development; providing raw materials for manufacturing; imparting training in various industrial trades; providing machinery on hire-purchase scheme to small-scale industries; providing equipment leasing facility; helping in export marketing of the products of small-scale industries; participating in bulk purchase programme of the Government; develop prototype of machines and equipment to pass on to small-scale industries for commercial production; distributing basic raw material among small-scale industries through raw material depots; help in development and up-gradation of technology and implementation of modernization programmes of small-scale industries; set up small-scale industries in other developing countries on turn-key basis; construction of industrial estates and finding markets of finished products of small scale industries in order to support and leverage SMEs to compete with large scale companies. In nutshell NSIC Major Schemes are: Single Point Registration, Bank Credit Facilitation, Raw Material Assistance, Consortia & Tender Marketing Scheme, NSIC online finance facilitation portal, information sharing, exhibitions,Infrastructure development, marketing intelligence services and technology incubation.

Prior to visiting the centre, the High Commissioner had an interaction discussion with the Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Ravindra Nath and the General Manager of NSIC, Dr. Praley Dey. The High Commissioner was informed that NSIC and the One Village One Product (OVOP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2010. He was further informed the High Commissioner that under the MOU, NSIC was to establish an incubation centre in Malawi. The High Commissioner noted that NSIC could play a vital role in the development of SMEs in Malawi particularly with regard to transfer of appropriate technologies and therefore underscored the need and importance of enhancing collaboration between NSIC and SME institutions in Malawi.

In his remarks, the High Commissioner said he would intensify efforts to find new ways of the two institutions working together with a view of promoting appropriate technology transfer in Malawi.
