Vice-Presiednt attends Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka
Leaders of Commonwealth countries gathered in Colombo from 15 to 17 November 2013 for their 23rd bi-annual conference to discuss global and Commonwealth issues and to agree on collective policies and initiatives. Commonwealth leaders agreed on Sri Lanka as the 2013 host for the meeting when they met in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 2009. Representing the head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth was Prince Charles, Prince of Wales who was accompanied by his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla. The Rt. Hon. Khumbo Kachale Vice President of Malawi represented Her Excellency, Dr. Joyce Banda , President of the Republic of Malawi, and at the Comonwealth Heads of Government held in Colombo. Accompanying the Vice-President were: Hon. Sosten Gwengwe, Minister of Industry and Trade; Hon. Abel Emphraim Kayembe, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr George Mkondiwa, Secretary for Foreign Affairs; H.E Mr. Bernard Sande, Malawi High Commissioner to the United Kingdom; H.E. Dr Perks Ligoya, Malawi High Commissiner to Indian and Sri Lanka; Mr. Clement Kumbemba, Chief Executive Malawi Invetsment and Trade Centre (MITC) and senior Government officials.

The Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa officially inaugurated the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Colombo on 15 November 2013. The theme of the Meeting was, "Growth with Equity; Inclusive Development."
In his inaugural speech, the Sri Lankan President welcomed all the Heads of Governments and their delegations to the meeting. He assured the meeting that his Government believed in upholding democracy and that he would not hesitate to take any action against anybody who violates human rights. "My country is committed to uphold Commonwealth values of democracy, rule of law and good governance in the shared vision of bringing better opportunities for people around the world," the President said.
The Prince of Wales said, "Ladies and gentlemen, each one of us is here because of the hope and trust we place in the Commonwealth to bring that 'touch of healing' to our troubles and deliver the very best future for our people." Prince Charles said that India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, declared in 1949 that the Commonwealth seemed capable of bringing "a touch of healing" to the management of contemporary world problems.
He went on to say that more than 60 years later, Commonwealth leaders do not need to be reminded of the many troubles that beset the world. Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague also attended the meeting.

Besides participating in the Commonwealth meeting, Rt. Hon Khumbo Kachali, held discussions with the President of Sri Lanka in the sidelines of the Commonwealth. The Vice-President also met other leaders and heads of reputable institutions and organisations. During the audience with the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Vice-President delivered a message of goodwill and solidality from the President of the Repblic of Malawi, Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda to President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, Government and people of Sri Lanka.
Other engagements of the Vice-President included: attending the Heads of Governmnet roundtable with business leaders at the International Convention Centre in Hambantota on 14 November 2013; participating in the tree planting ceremony in Hambantota; and receiving in audience various leaders of delagations at Hilton hotel in Colombo.
