African cotton experts oriented in cotton and textile production in India |

Courtesy of the Government of India, a delegation of officials from the cotton and textile sectors in Africa was conducted on a study tour of cotton and textile institutions in India from 3 to 7 March 2014. The aim of the study tour was to orient the officials on best practices in cotton and textile sector in India. The delegates comprised; cotton growers and ginners, policy makers, textile companies and managers from: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Nigeria, Uganda and Malawi. The tour was jointly organised by Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, under the ongoing Cotton Technical Assistance Programme for Africa. The officials visited a number of cotton and textile institutions in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Hyderabad and New Delhi. Specifically, the officials visited the Palladam Hi-tech weaving park (PHWP) and multi-skills school in Palladam, Southern India Mills Association (SIMA), Coimbatore, South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), Apparel Training Design Centre (ATDC), Tirupur, Pochampally Handloom Park Ltd. (PHPL), Hyderabad; Okhla Garment Textile Cluster (OTGC) , New Delhi; facilities of IL and FS Institute of Skills (IIS) in Okhla, New Delhi and finally workshop under the theme “Exploring Opportunities for Enhancing Business Partnership in Cotton and Textile sector in Africa” was held at Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi. |

The Cotton Technical Assistance Programme (TAP) was announced under the auspices of 2nd India Africa Forum Summit held in Addis Ababa in May 2011. It was officially launched by the Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Shri Anand Sharma at the 2nd India-Africa Trade Ministers Meeting held in New Delhi on 17th March 2012. |

Honourable John Bande, then Ministry of Industry and Trade represented the Government of Malawi at the launch. Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali) including Malawi, Nigeria and Uganda are participating in the programme which will end in 2014. However, discussions are under way to extend the programme for a further period to allow for completion of outstanding projects. |
