VISA INFORMATION

To apply for a Visa, the Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of intended departure.

Visas are required of all nationalities except the following:

CATEGORY A:
Note: All countries listed in Category A, do not require a visa if they are intending to stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days after which they will require a visa.

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Brunei, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominica Republic, Fiji, France, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Iceland, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, United States of America, Japan, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Maldives, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Samoa (Western), San Marino, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Island, South Africa, Sri-Lanka, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Swaziland, Sweden, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad-Tobago, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Colonies.

CATEGORY B:
Nationals of Commonwealth countries (except Cameroon, India and Nigeria) do not require a visa if they are intending to stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days after which they will require a visa.

Note: Visitors can extend their stay by obtaining a residence permit, valid for 6 months from date of entry.

FEES FOR MALAWI VISA

Malawi High Commission has revised its Visa Fees w.e.f. August 5, 2008. The new fees are as follow:

  5. Bank Statements – 3 months

  6. Confirm return tickets

  7. Passport

  8. 2 passport size photos

  9. Visa Days – Monday to Thursday

  10. Visa Timing: 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs
    1400 hrs to 1530 hrs

  11. Processing Time: About three (3) days under ordinary circumstances;
                            shorter timeframe under extraordinary circumstances
                            such as family emergency

TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT (TRP)

To obtain a Temporary Residence Permit, an application should be made prior to arrival. Contact the Controller of Immigration Services, P.O Box 331, Blantyre, Malawi. Temporary Residence Permits are valid for 6 months and cost MK6,000 (which is about US$44). Upon expiry, the TRP can be renewed for another 6 months at the same , then you can still buy another one at the same fee valid for another 6 months. Find out from the Immigration Department if your organization is exempt from paying the fee.

UPON ARRIVAL IN MALAWI

Every person flying into Malawi is required to fill in an entry form which is usually given to travellers on the plane, or available in the terminal of the airport. This form requires travelers to fill in their personal particulars such as name, surname, residential address in country of origin, address of where they are going, passport number, where and when passport was obtained, when the passport will be expiring and duration of stay in Malawi. The form is handed over to immigration officials for processing your entry into Malawi.

Domestic Departure Fee: MWK 200.00 (Rs 65/- at exchange rate on 01 Sept 08)

International Departure Fee: US$30.00 (Rs 1400/- at exchange rate on 01 Sept 08)

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers arriving from, or transiting through, infected areas.

Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is not a condition of entry to Malawi.

Malaria risk exists all year throughout the country. The predominant malignant falciparum strain is reported to be highly resistant to chloroquine and resistant to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine. The recommended prophylaxis is mefloquine.
