  SOUTHERN LAKESHORE

The southern Lakeshore extends from Chipoka through Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay to the Southern tip of the lake at Mangochi. This is also the source of the Shire river, the only outlet of Lake Malawi.

The Cape Maclear area has one of the most beautiful scenery and is bordered by a range of mountains which are also home to a variety of wildlife.

Cape Maclear forms a large part of Lake Malawi National Park. The shoreline from the eastern boundary, all the way to the Otter Point and beyond consists of golden sandy beaches, stunning boulders and crystal clear waters. It is here that a healthy population of spotted-necked otters are seen. A snorkeling experience on this part of the Lake is very much like snorkeling in a tropical fish tank due to the numerous varieties of brightly coloured and patterned cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear is a popular venue for both on and off shore activities.

Over 20 sites for diving experiences are available. Clear, fresh warm water and no tides or currents make Cape Maclear an ideal haven for divers. A number of lodges offer scuba diving lessons with Padi certification.

The area offers a variety of affordable of accommodation for all budgets.

Kayak Africa, Ghecko Lounge, Cape Mac lodge, Chembe Eagles Nest Danforth Yachting, Fat Monkeys, Gaia lodge offer pleasant tented camps with excellent stunning sunsets and broad beaches and plenty of fun!

Pumulani, which means “take a rest”, a lodge on the western fringe of Lake Malawi National Park offers unforgettable experience for holiday makers.

Monkey Bay built around the harbour installations with spectacular views over the wooded lakeshore. It is the biggest port and boat yard in Malawi. It is one of the popular destinations for the young and energetic. The MV Ilala sails from here- one of the most popular destinations in Africa!

The area between Monkey Bay and the southern tip of the Lake has numerous resorts popular for holidays, a variety of water sports, and conferencing. Club Makokola is located in a luxurious setting and is home to the famous Mlambe golf course.

Mangochi, previously known as Fort Johnstone, is situated on the banks of the Shire River, Malawi’s largest and longest river.The town has some interesting attractions from the slave trade and colonial era such as the Lake Malawi Museum, Commonwealth War graves for the World War 1 dead, the Queen Victoria monument which stands near the bridge. Good accommodation here could be found at Villa Tafika lodge.
