Zomba is attractively situated at the foot of a magnificent plateau comprising Zomba and Domasi Mountains. The town was first established at the end of the 19th century as the home of Sir Harry Johnston and the seat of the British Administration of the then Nyasaland. It remained the seat of Government after the establishment of self-rule in 1964 until 1975 when the Government moved to Lilongwe.
Where to stay
Sunbird Kuchawe Inn
The attractively Ku Chawe Inn is situated at the edge of the escarpment in lush gardens and affords amazingly beautiful views.
The road from town to Ku Chawe winds through spectacular vegetation and scenery. The roads around the plateau afford views across the mountain and access to Mulunguzi Dam, trout-filled (fishing-season) mountain streams and waterfalls. Horse riding is available on the plateau. There are spectacular views across the plains to Mount Mulanje, Lake Chilwa and the upper Shire River- especially rewarding during the rains when the air is clear of dust and haze.
